Florida A&M Rattlers Triumph Over Texas Southern in Extra Innings
HOUSTON, Texas – In a thrilling showdown on Saturday, the Florida A&M Rattlers secured an 8-7 victory over the Texas Southern Tigers in 10 innings, showcasing resilience and determination throughout the game.
The Rattlers quickly established dominance, scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to junior Justen Crews, who drove in Broedy Poppell and freshman Jay Campbell with a clutch single. They extended their lead to 4-0 by the fifth inning, with Crews adding another RBI.
However, the Tigers mounted a fierce comeback, tying the game at 4-4 before the Rattlers regained their advantage with a three-run surge in the seventh inning. Crews played a pivotal role once again, contributing a two-run single to push the score to 7-4. Yet, Texas Southern battled back, ultimately leveling the score at 7-7.
In the decisive 10th inning, senior Jalen Niles scored the final run for Florida A&M, sealing the victory. Senior Cody Williams earned the win, throwing two shutout innings with only two hits allowed.
Crews was the standout performer of the game, finishing 3 for 3 at the plate with five RBIs, while every Rattler starter reached base. Florida A&M capitalized on scoring opportunities, going 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position and drawing 11 walks from Texas Southern pitching.
