Putin Suggests Direct Russia-Ukraine Talks in Istanbul on May 15 | Russia-Ukraine War Update

Putin Proposes Unconditional Talks with Ukraine Amid Ceasefire Call

In a significant diplomatic overture, Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for direct negotiations with Ukraine to be held in Istanbul on May 15, emphasizing the need for talks “without preconditions” to establish lasting peace. This proposal was made shortly after leaders from Ukraine, France, Germany, Poland, and the UK convened in Kyiv, where they urged a 30-day unconditional ceasefire slated to begin on Monday, backed by United States President Donald Trump.

Putin’s remarks included a criticism of what he termed European “ultimatums” and highlighted efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict that has plagued the region since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. While he did not address the ceasefire call explicitly, he offered Ukraine the opportunity to resume negotiations, stressing that Russia seeks to “eliminate the root causes” of the conflict.

As of now, Ukraine’s response to Putin’s proposal remains unclear. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously indicated willingness for peace talks only after a ceasefire is established. The leaders of the aforementioned nations have warned of “massive” new sanctions against Moscow if it fails to comply with the ceasefire plan.

Putin’s firm stance includes demands that Ukraine halt its NATO ambitions and recognizes Russia’s claims over several Ukrainian territories. He suggested a framework similar to a previous draft agreement from 2022, proposing Ukraine’s neutrality in exchange for international security assurances.

The backdrop of these developments reveals heightened tensions and military confrontations, with both sides accusing each other of ceasefire violations. Amidst this complex landscape, the impending talks could be pivotal in shaping the future of the ongoing conflict.
