Hoerner and Turner Spark Cubs’ 9th-Inning Comeback Against Marlins – Sun Sentinel

Cubs Rally Late to Defeat Marlins 5-4

By Gavin Dorsey

CHICAGO — In a thrilling come-from-behind victory, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Miami Marlins 5-4 on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field, spurred by a dramatic ninth-inning rally.

The Marlins initially took control with a solo home run from Kyle Stowers in the second and another round-tripper from Connor Norby in the seventh. Javier Sanoja contributed with an RBI ground-out, and Jesus Sanchez added an RBI single, giving Miami a 4-2 lead as they headed into the bottom of the ninth.

The Cubs began their comeback when Nico Hoerner launched a line drive single to center, narrowing the gap to one run. The momentum surged, and soon after, pinch-hitter Justin Turner stepped up. He delivered the game-winning blow with a clutch two-run double to left field, driving in both Hoerner and Vidal Bruján to seal the Cubs’ victory.

Chicago’s Pete Crow-Armstrong and Carson Kelly were instrumental in the offense, each recording two hits. Crow-Armstrong also added his 11th home run of the season in the third inning.

Chris Flexen (1-0) showcased a strong performance on the mound, allowing just one hit over the final two innings to earn his first win. Meanwhile, Miami’s Jesus Tinoco (2-1) struggled, permitting two hits and three runs in only one-third of an inning.

Despite their early-game struggles with runners in scoring position—finishing 0 for 4 through the first eight innings—the Cubs capitalized in the ninth, going 2 for 2 when it mattered most.

Looking ahead, the Marlins will send left-hander Ryan Weather (0-0) to the mound against Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon (2-2, 4.53) for the series finale on Wednesday night.
