Race Heating Up for Sarasota County School Board Seat Held by Bridget Ziegler
The competition for Bridget Ziegler’s seat on the Sarasota County School Board is intensifying, particularly after Republican Heidi Brandt announced her candidacy for the District 1 position. While some allies are anticipating Ziegler’s next move, she remains tight-lipped about her future plans amid speculation that she may pursue a seat in the Florida Legislature.
In response to inquiries from Florida Politics regarding her potential legislative ambitions, Ziegler stated, "We’re over a year out from the election… my focus remains on continuing to deliver for those who hired me." Ziegler, who recently secured re-election in 2022 and serves as Chair of the board, emphasized her commitment to maintaining academic quality and combating perceived radical influences in education.
Despite facing calls for her resignation amid a 2023 scandal, Ziegler has not confirmed whether she will seek another term on the School Board. “If that changes, I’ll make sure to let you know,” she texted, suggesting an air of uncertainty surrounding her political future.
Brandt’s announcement has further fueled speculation about Ziegler’s intentions. Political consultant Max Goodman, working with Brandt, approached prominent GOP Treasurer Eric Robinson about managing campaign finances. Robinson, a former treasurer for Ziegler’s campaigns, did not accept but observed discussions between Brandt and Ziegler regarding the timing of announcements.
As the political landscape evolves, many expect Ziegler might pivot towards a legislative role, particularly with Rep. James Buchanan’s impending term limit in House District 74. With progressive candidates successfully capturing seats in the recent elections, the upcoming contest for the School Board promises to be competitive.
