DJ Lagway on Track for Comeback as Florida Gators QB
SANDESTIN, FL: Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway is making significant strides in his recovery as he follows a rigorous training schedule, throwing three times a week. Gators head coach Billy Napier reported that Lagway, who had been sidelined during spring practices due to an injury, is “on schedule” in his progress, tossing approximately 210 passes a week.
At the recent SEC Spring Meetings, Napier confirmed that Lagway resumed throwing earlier this month while training with his personal coach in Jacksonville. Although he didn’t participate in spring practices, Lagway managed to hand off during the April 12 spring game. “We’re doing exactly what we did in the past," Napier stated, emphasizing that Lagway is on the right path for his recovery.
The 19-year-old quarterback took over for Graham Mertz last season and led Florida to a commendable 6-1 record as a starter, showcasing his talent with an impressive average of 10 yards per pass attempt, ranking him second nationally. His ability to complete five 40-yard passes in separate games further highlights his skills.
Lagway’s road to recovery has been aided by the time off, allowing both arm and hamstring injuries sustained during the previous season to heal. While Napier did not provide a specific health percentage for Lagway, he affirmed that the young quarterback is in a good place to continue his development.
As the Gators look forward to the upcoming season, Lagway’s performance will be crucial, with fans eager to see his return to form. This promising comeback could be pivotal for Florida as they aim for a successful campaign ahead.
