Give the Gift of Life at the Annual Florida Bar Convention
Attendees of the Annual Florida Bar Convention in Boca Raton are encouraged to make a difference by donating blood at the One Blood Big Red Bus on Friday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. With the approach of hurricane season, the demand for blood donations becomes increasingly urgent, according to Susan Forbes from One Blood.
The entire donation process takes about 45 minutes, which includes filling out forms, undergoing a wellness check consisting of blood pressure, pulse, temperature, iron count, and cholesterol screening, and a brief recovery period post-donation. While walk-ins are welcome, donors are advised to schedule an appointment in advance by visiting oneblood.org/donate-now and using sponsor code 77518.
All donors must present identification, and in appreciation for their contribution, they will receive a $20 e-gift card and a trucker hat. During the summer, while donations often dip, the necessity for blood is constant, particularly for patients battling illnesses such as sickle cell anemia and cancer.
Testimonials from donors highlight the life-saving impact of blood donation. One donor, Allan from Thonotosassa, reflected on his journey after a severe car accident in 2008, which motivated him to donate over 9 gallons of platelets to help others.
Forbes emphasized that less than 5% of those eligible to donate actually do, making each donation particularly significant. "Summertime is a great time to start, if you’ve never donated," she said.
