Lee County Man Arrested After Fleeing Traffic Stop, Found with Dangerous Drugs
LEE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A Lee County man, Jophery McCoy, was arrested on Monday morning following a dramatic attempt to evade deputies during a traffic stop. The incident began on Ortiz Avenue when deputies pulled over McCoy’s vehicle for several driving violations. As the officers approached, McCoy abandoned the car and fled on foot into a nearby neighborhood.
After a brief pursuit, deputies located McCoy hiding beneath a recreational vehicle (RV). Upon apprehending him, they discovered multiple baggies of dangerous drugs, including cocaine, MDMA, and fentanyl, in his possession. Further investigation revealed drug packaging materials inside the vehicle he had abandoned.
This latest arrest marks the continuation of McCoy’s troubled history with law enforcement; he is a convicted felon who has previously served 21 years in prison for manslaughter in a 1998 case in Lee County.
McCoy now faces serious charges, including two counts of possession of a controlled substance, trafficking in fentanyl, obstruction without violence, and driving with a suspended license.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is taking this incident seriously amid growing concerns surrounding the proliferation of dangerous drugs in the community. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities that may involve substance abuse.
