DeSantis Approves $118 Million for North Florida Land Conservation
TALLAHASSEE, FL – In a significant move to preserve natural habitats, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet approved nearly $118 million on Tuesday for the conservation of approximately 76,000 acres of land in North Florida. The funding, allocated from the Florida Forever program, will enable the state to purchase two conservation easements, effectively safeguarding these areas from potential development while allowing for ongoing agricultural activities.
The largest easement, covering 61,389 acres in Baker and Union counties, will be acquired for $93.617 million from Weyerhaeuser Forest Holdings. Designated for tree farming and recreational use, this land is increasingly threatened by urban development pressures from nearby Lake City and Jacksonville, according to state staff reports.
In addition, the state will invest $24.326 million for a conservation easement on 14,743 acres owned by Blackbottom Holdings, LLC, situated in Baker and Bradford counties. These efforts align with state priorities to maintain Florida’s natural landscapes in the face of growth.
Furthermore, DeSantis and the Cabinet sanctioned a $5.933 million purchase for a 1,745-acre conservation easement affecting Bradford, Clay, and Putnam counties from Terwillegar-Tumlin Properties Inc. This tract is not only bordered by residential areas and mixed-use properties but is also projected to be developed by 2040, as indicated by development projections from the University of Florida.
