Alligator Alcatraz Detention Facility Set to Close Amid Controversy
COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — The contentious Alligator Alcatraz detention facility is expected to close within days, according to internal emails from the Florida Division of Emergency Management obtained by Fox 4. Legal expert Pamella Seay pointed out that the facility’s impending shutdown renders other pending cases against it irrelevant.
An email from Kevin Guthrie indicated that the number of individuals held at the facility will reach zero shortly. This development follows a ruling by a South Florida judge, who ordered the facility’s closure within 60 days during a recent hearing. In response, Governor Ron DeSantis filed an appeal, expressing doubts about the court’s fairness. "This judge wasn’t gonna give us a fair shake,” he remarked.

When questioned about the closure, DeSantis suggested that the rapid deportations occurring at the facility contributed to its emptying, stating, "I think he was just referring to they’re deporting them very quickly."

Seay explained that the judge’s order, labelled as a preliminary injunction, won’t set a precedent for other detention centers, such as the Jacksonville facility, commonly referred to as "Deportation Depot." Consequently, Seay believes that pursuing an appeal may now be pointless, as the closure renders the entire case moot.

While it’s unclear if DeSantis will continue pursuing the appeal, the Florida Division of Emergency Management has not commented on why the closure is proceeding despite the pending legal action. Officials have yet to confirm the facility’s closing date or outline subsequent plans.
