Panel to Discuss New Board Certification in Insurance Coverage Law

TALLAHASSEE, FL – The Florida Bar’s Program Evaluation Committee is set to review a proposal for a new board certification in “Insurance Coverage Law” later this week. This initiative follows a narrow approval from the Board of Legal Specialization Committee in January, where members voted 8-6 after revising certain standards suggested by sponsors in November.

The current board certification program features 27 practice areas and is recognized as one of the most extensive in the country. However, proponents from the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law (RPPTL) Section argue that the proposed certification is essential to address a "void" in the realm of insurance law. They emphasize that insurance coverage is not merely a subspecialty but a distinct field necessitating specialized knowledge of Florida Statutes and case law.

Debby Crockett, a Tampa-based attorney who led the committee behind this initiative, stated that a dedicated certification would significantly benefit consumers, especially evident after the seasonal impact of hurricanes in Florida. “Consumers need reliable access to experienced, board-certified attorneys when navigating insurance issues,” she said.

An impressive number of 258 lawyers have reportedly signed a petition indicating their willingness to pursue certification if the proposal receives approval. Additionally, the initiative has garnered endorsement from United Policy Holders, a prominent non-profit consumer advocacy group, along with the Florida Justice Association’s Property Insurance Section and the Defense Lawyers Association.
