Ben Diamond Decides Against St. Petersburg Mayor Bid
St. Petersburg, FL – Ben Diamond announced Thursday evening that he will not run for Mayor in the upcoming 2026 election. The former state Representative had spent the summer evaluating a potential challenge to incumbent Mayor Ken Welch, but ultimately concluded that it was not the right time for a return to public office.

“I have spent the summer considering running for Mayor of St. Petersburg,” Diamond shared with Florida Politics, expressing gratitude for the support he received from community leaders and residents. However, he emphasized his family’s priority at this stage of his life. “Our son and daughters are at those wonderful ages where they still like hanging out with Dad,” he noted, explaining his decision to focus on family rather than commit to a rigorous campaign.
