Florida AG Investigates Lorex Over Security Concerns
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has launched an investigation into Lorex, a camera manufacturer with Chinese ties, amid concerns that their devices—used for baby monitors, nanny cams, and doorbells—could compromise national security. Uthmeier has issued a subpoena seeking extensive information from the company, which was previously owned by China’s Dahua Technology.
Uthmeier’s inquiry stems from worries about foreign espionage and whether Florida consumers were misled about the privacy features of Lorex products available at major retailers like Home Depot and Amazon. "Florida families deserve straight answers about who touches their data," Uthmeier stated. He emphasized that the potential for sensitive footage, such as that of children, being accessed by the Chinese Communist Party is unacceptable.

The subpoena seeks details regarding Lorex’s ownership, software updates, data storage practices, and any security vulnerabilities or breaches. Although it does not allege misconduct, it reflects a growing scrutiny of the company’s operations.

Lorex, which has a North American headquarters in Maryland and Ontario, has faced criticism for its previous ownership. Congress banned federal agencies from purchasing Lorex products in 2019 due to concerns about security vulnerabilities, and the FCC imposed a ban on Dahua products in 2022 due to similar issues.

Additionally, reports linking Dahua to human rights abuses in Xinjiang have raised alarms, prompting calls for retailers like Costco to cease stocking Lorex products. Uthmeier reiterated that the investigation is not just about consumer protection but also a pressing national security issue, stating, "We will use every tool to fight back against companies that jeopardize our safety."
