Sen. Jason Pizzo Announces Independent Run for Florida Governor
In a move that has intensified the race for Florida’s governorship, State Senator Jason Pizzo has officially declared his candidacy for the position following Ron DeSantis’ anticipated exit. During an interview with CBS News Miami’s Jim DeFede, Pizzo confirmed, “Yes, I am,” when asked about his plans to run.

Pizzo, previously seen as a leading Democratic contender, surprised many by stepping down as Senate Democratic Leader and registering as an independent. This decision allows him to distance himself from party politics and focus on what he believes are the pressing needs of Floridians, such as housing affordability and improved resilience to climate impacts. “Stripping myself of a title and party designation allows me to run free and clear,” he stated earlier in April.

Despite lacking the backing of a major party’s funding framework, Pizzo is confident in his financial capabilities, announcing his willingness to invest $25 million of his own money, in addition to an anticipated $30 million from family and friends.

At 48, Pizzo acknowledges the challenges ahead as an independent candidate. Recent polls suggest a tough road, especially with multiple prominent Republicans in the running, including U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds and potentially Casey DeSantis. The Democratic side remains uncertain, with no major candidates officially declaring, though past Republican David Jolly and Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava are being watched closely.

Pizzo’s commitment stems from a belief that he can offer a unique blend of life experience and resolve needed to affect significant change in Florida’s governance. “If I had faith that somebody else could do the job better, I’d campaign for them,” he emphasized. As the race unfolds, all eyes will be on Pizzo’s independent campaign strategy.
