Mabel Bulter, Pioneering Politician and Advocate, Passes Away at 98
Central Florida Mourns the Loss of Political Pioneer Mable Butler at Age 98
Central Florida has lost a monumental figure in local politics with the passing of Mable Butler, who died on Saturday at the age of 98. Heralded as the “Matriarch of African American politics in Orlando,” Butler’s family announced her death, marking the end of a remarkable journey characterized by unwavering advocacy for her community.
Butler was a trailblazer, becoming the first Black woman elected to the Orlando City Council from 1984 to 1990 and the first Black individual on the Orange County Commission from 1990 to 1998. Her tenure was marked by fervent advocacy for affordable housing and minority representation. Her contributions also helped bring the Florida Classic to Orlando.
Born in Gainesville and raised in Jacksonville, Butler moved to Orlando in 1957 with her four children. Before entering politics, she had a rich history of grassroots activism, significantly shaping local governance, including a pivotal role in addressing discriminatory housing practices.
Butler’s legacy includes her volunteer work at the L. Claudia Allen Senior Center and her involvement in the establishment of projects like Butler’s Preserve, a Habitat for Humanity subdivision recognized for its efforts to provide affordable housing.
Commendations from community leaders flowed in following her death. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer described her as a force for good, and U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost praised her as a relentless advocate for marginalized communities.
Her family, which includes five biological children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, reflected on her spirit and impact. A celebration of life is planned for September 19 at the L. Claudia Allen Senior Center, followed by a memorial service on September 20 at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke.
Mable Butler’s enduring commitment to service has left a lasting imprint on Central Florida’s political landscape and its communities.
