Former Lee County GOP Chair Michael Thompson Challenges Rep. Tiffany Esposito in Primary

Michael Thompson, the former chair of the Lee County Republican Party, has officially entered the race to challenge incumbent Rep. Tiffany Esposito in the Republican primary for House District 77. Thompson announced his candidacy on social media, emphasizing the need for local representation.

“It’s time for residents of East Lee County to be represented by someone who actually lives in East Lee County,” Thompson stated, criticizing what he perceives as a disconnect between the community and political insiders. He previously served as chair during a significant period of change within the party, aligning with the America First movement.

While Esposito serves as the President and CEO of SWFL Inc., a regional chamber of commerce, she has expressed confidence in her record since winning her seat in 2022. “I’m proud to stand on my record in the community where I was born and raised,” she said, noting her efforts to protect jobs and support conservative policies, including immigration reform.

Thompson’s campaign highlights a commitment to engage residents from areas like Alva and Lehigh Acres, asserting that the time for “Fort Myers insiders” to dictate political representation is over. He has called for voters’ support in the upcoming August 2026 primary.

The Republican primary is expected to be competitive, as over 62% of voters in District 77 supported Donald Trump in the last election, demonstrating strong Republican sentiment. Esposito won approximately 64% of the votes against her Democratic opponent, which illustrates her current incumbency strength but also sets the stage for a contentious primary battle.
