MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins tight end Darren Waller is making strides as he prepares for the upcoming NFL season after a month-long journey back into football. Initially placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, Waller took to the practice field after returning from retirement, marking his active participation for the first time during training camp.

During Wednesday’s practice, prior to the Dolphins’ focus on their Week 1 opponent, the Indianapolis Colts, Waller participated more fully in competitive drills against the defense. “I’m happy to be where I’m at and in the mix,” Waller shared. “It feels like my first practice in a while, and while there are areas I need to improve, I’m just grateful to be here.”

Head Coach Mike McDaniel expressed satisfaction with Waller’s involvement in group activities, noting the need for him to regain football shape after a year off. Waller’s cautious return has been methodical; he spent the first month of camp working on the sidelines and didn’t engage in drills during joint practices with the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions.

Although Waller dressed for the Dolphins’ preseason finale, he refrained from contact, focusing instead on reconditioning his body for the demands of the game. Acknowledging the unpredictability of returning from time away, Waller emphasized the importance of taking a measured approach.
