NEW YORK – In an unforgettable night at Citi Field, the New York Mets secured a 19-9 victory over the Miami Marlins, setting a franchise record for runs in a home game. The highlight of the evening was the major league debut of 22-year-old pitcher Jonah Tong, who allowed only one earned run over five innings.

Tong was greeted with a standing ovation from a sellout crowd of 42,112 as he took the mound, quickly establishing himself as a force with a six-pitch first inning. The Canadian right-hander showcased his talent by striking out six batters and issuing no walks, throwing 63 strikes out of 97 pitches in a performance reminiscent of Tim Lincecum.

The Mets wasted no time in building an impressive lead, going up 5-0 in the first inning, thanks to a two-run homer by Juan Soto and a three-run blast from Brandon Nimmo. They expanded their lead to 12-0 in a remarkable second inning, with Pete Alonso contributing a two-run homer.

Nimmo’s solo shot in the sixth, along with a three-run homer from Luis Torrens during a six-run eighth inning, capped off a stunning offensive display that marked the Mets’ second game scoring 19 runs this season and the seventh in team history.

Despite some defensive errors in the fifth inning, which allowed the Marlins to score four runs, Tong ended his outing on a high note, striking out Liam Hicks with a 95 mph fastball. Otto Lopez was a standout for the Marlins, hitting a homer and recording a two-run single.

The Mets, having won nine of their last 13 games, look to build on this momentum with their next matchup against Miami, featuring pitchers Edward Cabrera and David Peterson on Saturday.
