On Friday, New Orleans will host memorials and festivities to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which struck on August 29, 2005. The Category 3 hurricane led to extensive flooding, resulting in over 1,300 deaths and approximately $200 billion in damages, marking it as one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history. A significant factor that contributed to the high death toll was the failure of federally managed levees.

To honor the victims and advocate for infrastructure and climate change improvements, the city’s events will begin in the Lower 9th Ward—a community heavily affected by the levee failure. The day’s commemorations will feature a healing ceremony and a reading of names of those who perished in the disaster. A wreath-laying ceremony at a memorial for unidentified victims will take place at 11:20 a.m., followed by a moment of silence.

Additionally, a march featuring a brass band will proceed several blocks to Hunter’s Field park, where community leaders and speakers will reflect on the impact of the storm and advocate for Aug. 29 to be established as a state and local holiday.

The events are organized by Katrina Commemoration Inc. and Hip Hop Caucus and include a mix of memorial unveilings, performances, and a fundraising gala.

Through these activities, the community aims to not only remember the tragedy but also work towards a safer, more resilient future in light of ongoing climate challenges. The spirit of remembrance is set to unite thousands as they honor the past and look to improvements for the city’s future.
