Infant perishes in tragic sinking of asylum seekers’ boat near French shore | Migration News

European Union leaders are pushing for new legislation to expedite the return of asylum seekers from the 27-nation bloc after a tragic incident where a baby died when a boat carrying asylum seekers sank in the English Channel off the coast of France. The latest tragedy adds to the 52 deaths of migrants attempting to cross the channel this year, the highest since 2018. The UK has seen a surge in migrants arriving via boats, with over 26,000 landing on UK shores just this year.

Both the French and UK governments are working to stop the flow of asylum seekers and migrants, often paying smugglers for passage to the UK on small boats. France’s new right-wing Prime Minister has promised a stricter immigration policy and to crack down on people traffickers who exploit desperation. The issue of small boat arrivals was a key topic in the UK’s recent general election, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer announcing plans to address the influx.

In response to these challenges, European Union leaders have called for urgent new legislation to facilitate, increase, and speed up returns from the bloc. They have urged the European Commission to propose new laws to support these efforts and explore new ways to prevent and counter irregular migration, potentially considering establishing return centers outside of the EU. Italy recently opened two such centers in Albania. The increased push for legislation and cooperation comes in the wake of the tragic loss of life in the English Channel and the ongoing challenges of irregular migration in Europe.
